Pupils help transform ‘drab locker room’ into new library

MONEY DONATED TO FACILITY IN MEMORY OF FORMER HEAD

-

PUPILS at Scartho Junior Academy have helped transform an old locker room into a library to enjoy together.

On World Book Day 2021, they were inspired by a storyteller and retired librarian, Alec Williams, to dedicate a space in school which celebrated their passion and love of reading.

Teacher Katherine Goffin said: “We decided it was important to open a new library area within the school that is a space for children to get lost in the power of books.

“It has been a year in the making, but what was once an old, drab locker room, has now been transformed into a library space which the children can enjoy as a safe, cosy space outside of the classroom, to browse, read, borrow and share books with each other.”

The school librarians, made up of a team of Year 6 pupils, have played a pivotal role in getting the library ready for everyone to enjoy.

During the first lockdown, Sophie, 10, spent some of her time creating her own library from home, creating quizzes for her friends and teachers, and making membership cards for them, and so was a natural candidate for the role of librarian.

She believes that libraries are magical spaces.

Katie Armstrong, 10, said: “We just really cannot wait to share this space with everyone,” and Max Robinson, also 10, added: “My favourite genre is non-fiction, so I’m really looking forward to helping others find what inspires them to ignite their own passions.”

Mrs Goffin said: “We are incredibly grateful to the family of Mr Frank Bellamy, a previous headteacher of the school, who shared our value and love of reading and donated money to our library in his memory.

“Thanks must also be sent out to the school community for helping us raise money for more books through our virtual book fair.”
