Residents’ disgust as visitors leave rubbish strewn over beach and streets

SOILED NAPPIES, BOTTLES OF VODKA AND DISPOSABLE BARBECUES AMONG WASTE

CLEETHORPES residents have described their disgust after visitors to the beach on a hot and sunny Friday left the beach and nearby streets covered in rubbish.

Those looking after the beach and the cleanliness of the resort said they were appalled by the level of rubbish dumped after the hottest day of the year.

Resort manager for Cleethorpes Scott Snowden said bottles of vodka, soiled nappies and disposable barbecues were tossed on the beach.

Some visitors had dumped their bags of rubbish next to overflowing bins, rather than walk a few metres to the nearest bin which was nearly empty. North East Lincolnshire Council staff worked quickly to remove the litter.

Teams of volunteers picked up litter which filled several bags. The beach was also raked ready for the start of another busy day in Cleethorpes.

Scott told the Grimsby Telegraph: “The vast majority of people that come to the resort are respectful. But you do get the odd groups of people and individuals who leave behind disposable barbecues, bottles of vodka and soiled nappies.

“These are the things people think it is OK to just leave behind. When is it OK to not just leave a bottle of vodka behind but to smash it as well? We all take pride in our resort and it breaks our hearts. People should know better.”

The resort manager added: “North East Lincolnshire Council staff have been fantastic in getting out on the beach and on the streets when everyone else is still in bed to make sure our golden sands are looking at their pristine best.

“The waste management team are excellent and had the place looking great ready for the start of business.

“The beach was raked. But they found plastic plates with forks and knives that had just been left. It is so frustrating.

“We also had an exceptionally high tide which brought in some rubbish from the sea which then gets dumped on paths.

“Our teams were out at early light picking up litter in a collective effort.

“There are a number of volunteers who are passionate about keeping our resort clear of rubbish. We are glad some people can pick up their own litter and leave it near a bin.”

A resident who was visiting said: “It was disgusting to see the beach in such a state. There was rubbish left all over the sand, including beer boxes and cans as well as fish and chip boxes and bottles.

“A lot of the bins near The Pier were full so people had just put loads of rubbish on the floor nearby - but there were plenty of emptier bins further down the Prom that they could have used if they had just walked a bit.

“There is just no excuse for leaving so much litter behind. Even if you can’t find a bin, you should take it away rather than just dumping it.

“It was such a lovely evening and so many people were out enjoying themselves but it just looked like a mess. It’s not a good look for people who are visiting such a beautiful place.”
