TWO brothers from Grimsby will be taking part in a golf challenge to raise money in memory of their niece who died following a cancer battle, aged just 37.

Terri Wells passed away last June after the mum-of-five lost her battle with cancer having been diagnosed in May 2020.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, she was told on her own that she had cancer, something that she said was “very hard”.

At her funeral, more than 100 mourners turned up to say goodbye to the much-loved local woman who was said to have a “bubbly” personality.

At the service, memorable songs such as “Shape Of You” by Ed Sheeran were played and “Truly, Madly, Deeply” by Savage Garden, which was a tune played when Terri married husband Paul.

Nearly a year since her passing, her uncles, Ian, 48, and Sean Ritchie, 52, are planning to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support by playing 99 holes of golf in one day.

Sean said: “Terri managed to beat cancer once, but sadly it came back.

“Nothing seemed to help her and it was a really hard moment for us all when we were told she’d passed away.

“There are 10 uncles and aunties and we found it so hard losing her, but we had to just get on with it and make sure we stuck together as a family.

“Even though we knew she was going to go, you can never prepare yourself for it and you never get used to it.”

Both Sean and Ian are keen golfers and will be taking on the 99 holes of golf on Tuesday, June 21, playing across a number of local courses including Cleethorpes and Grimsby.

In support of their cause, all the golf courses have allowed the brothers to play for free.

Sean says it’ll be a tough day and he knows it’s a hard task to complete all the holes in one go.

He said: “It’s going to be a big ask on Tuesday, but we’ll definitely be giving it a go.

“It’s difficult to even think about really, especially because of why we’re doing it. I’m looking forward to the end where my wife and family will be watching us though.”

He added: “We just want to get as much help for Macmillan as we possibly can.

“It’s a great thing to do and a nice way to help others remember Terri.”
