THE oldest pub in Louth has been recognised for the quality of its cask ales and warm and friendly atmosphere with a prestigious regional award.

Ye Olde Whyte Swanne, at 45 Eastgate, has officially been named Town Pub Of The Year by Louth and District CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale).

The pub was established in 1612 during the reign of King James I and is rumoured to be haunted. After winning the award, landlord Neil Bunch told Grimsby Live: “It’s not just the beer, it’s awarded for the whole presentation of the pub, the staff, the way our customers are greeted, and the atmosphere in the bar. It all goes a long way to us winning the award.

“The pub is warm and comfortable and we have a log fire in the winter and it’s also the oldest pub in town. The beer garden is a hidden gem and in the summer time, it doubles the size of our pub. It’s a sun trap and it’s full of vibrant flowers. “We offer four cask ales on at the same time, two regulars, and two rotating cask beers. The rest of the beer offer is something very different; we have Belgian and Dutch beers.

“Apart from the beers, we have an expansive wine selection and we have a large non-alcoholic range which is increasingly popular, such as bottled non-alcoholic cider, so people don’t have to have a soft drink when they are not drinking. “A lot of hard work goes into it as a joint effort throughout the team, not just the bar staff but the kitchen and the youngsters who do the running. There’s also the quality of our sup

pliers, such as the butcher who passes on that quality to our customers. We’re also a member of Cask Mark and we are in the top 10 per cent in the country for the quality of our beer.”

Ye Olde Whyte Swanne is open from 10am to 11pm Monday to Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4pm. The Louth and District CAMRA can be followed on their Facebook page.
