- By Tom Scargill

Hebden-Bridge born singersongwriter Ed Sheeran has topped the UK’s official albums chart for a staggering eighth consecutive week with his second album x. The BRIT Award-winning artist is now one of only four artists to hold the number one spot for eight weeks or longer this millennium, following The Beatles, Adele and James Blunt.

Ed said: “I’m thrilled that x has made it to number one for eight weeks in a row.

“I am really proud of the album and it is such an honour to hold one of the longest-running albums at number one this millennium alongside the likes of The Beatles and Adele.

“I’m really looking forward to touring the album and hope to see you all at the autumn UK dates.”

The album peaked at number one on iTunes in 83 countries, hit top spot in the official charts in 14 countries, became the biggest-selling album of the year after just six weeks and broke Spotify records after receiving the highest amount of week one global album streams.

Ed has also received the most top ten iTunes chart positions that one artist has held simultaneously since the iTunes store launched 11 years ago.

Last year Ed won two BRIT Awards - ‘Best Male Artist’ and ‘Best Breakthrough Artist - and an Ivor Novello for ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’ for The A Team.

He was also nominated for
