Juniors hit form to finish in fine style

-

A dominant display in the singles ensured that Halifax/ Huddersfield and District ended their inter-district season on a high following a 23-13 success over Bradford at Baildon. The scores were locked a6-6 after the morning foursomes, but Tommy Ward’s charges took control after lunch.

Huddersfield’s Josh Morton and Jon Fleetwood of Crosland Heath set the ball rolling before Halifax/Huddersfield and District suffered a blip with Bradford halving the next game then winning the next two, Hebden Bridge’s Henry Butterworth and Greg Hudson Hunter from Ogden the players to suffer.

Lightcliffe’s Charlie Jaffray steadied the ship and Ben Pullen’s 3&2 success saw the visitors firmly back in the driving seat.

Harry Boothroyd was unable to prevent a 1up defeat, but after that it was Halifax all the way with a series of impressive results.

Bradley Hall’s Joe Lowson was a 3&2 winner in his game with Woodsome Hall’s Isaac Turner returning a superb 5&4 success.

However, pride of place went to Oliver Machon of Bradley Hall who wrapped up his contest with Branshaw’s Sam Reeve early at 8&6 with Matthew Beaumont of Outlane putting the icing on the cake with a 5&4 victory Four Halifax West End GC members are only 18 holes away from playing in the Lexas Golf Challenge national final at Royal Birkdale.

Lexas ran a golf day recently with the top two from each division going through to play in the regional final at Marriott Worsley Park in Manchester played on September 3.

The leading score in the regional final means that James Dix, Richard Briscoe, Paul Beck and Jim Hallett will represent Halifax West End GC in the national final on Wednesday, October 8.

It is the second year that Lexas have ran a golf day at the club and it has become something that the members look forward to competing in.

Meanwhile, the rabbits league team became champions of Section A of the Halifax and Huddersfield District Rabbits Association thanks to a last match defeat against Huddersfield.

West End went into the last match needing just onepoint to become champions but gained two points thanks to a win gained by Richard Briscoe and Kevin Crowley.

The team had to play twice in two nights and on Wednesday the team had a brilliant 5- 0 win against Crosland Heath to boost their chances of winning the league.

The highlight was a match winning putt on the 18th by debutant Lee Gray to win his match 1 up.

His partner Gary Grant had had his usual solid game to get the pair to the 18th. He has been a stalwart of the team, and along with Ed Edwards and Richard Briscoe, have producedsolid performances week in week out.

“These players were “high” men at the beginning of the season but their consistent play has meant that they quickly became “low” men for the games,” said club pro Darren Arber.

“James Hunter, Tony Rogan and Kevin Crowley have won important games thanks to their dogged persistence and the fact that James hits the ball a country mile.

“Shaun Diamond, John Charman, Jonathon Granton, John Clay jr and Simon Kirk have all contributed points to the cause. We could not have won without each and every players commitment.

“I have been very proud of their performances. They have maintained the fantastic season that West End golf club teams have had this season.

“Let’s hope that the seniors team can carry the mantle next Friday against Huddersfield at Crow Nest Park.”
