Hirst a winner again at last

-

The year 2003 seemed a long time ago for popular Crow Nest Park member Eddie Hirst, as he ended his Major competition drought when he won the Thompson Shield last weekend.

Having won the Captains Day Cup in 2003, Hirst although playing regularly and competing in most club competitions, entered the golfing wilderness until last Saturday when he rediscovered the form of earlier years.

His net score of 62 playing off a handicap of 23 won him the shield by two strokes.

The victory brought a second reason to be pleased as it reduced his handicap at the same time by three shots.

On a day of fluctuating weather conditions the overall scoring was very good with 12 scores on level par or better from an excellent field of 100 plus golfers.

In runners up spot was former Rabbit golfer Alan Perry who returned a commendable gross 80 net 64, and moved into the Tigers section as a result.

In third place was Alex McFadzean who scored a net 65 off a handicap of10.

The Shield donated to the club by the late Sir Donald Thompson MP was presented to the winner by the donors widow Lady Patricia Thompson.
