Council is to consult the community over the future of the former Ridings School, Ovenden, Halifax, which closed in July. Labour councillors are keen to turn the school, with its technology block, sports hall, theatre, offices and classrooms, into a creativity centre for people working in the arts, digital and design businesses.
chairman of Overgate Hospice Choir and a former youth worker, Keith Scotford, has died suddenly at his Luddenden home. Mr Scotford worked for Calderdale Youth Service for 25 years until his retirement in 1992.A former member of Halifax Light Opera Society, Mr Scotford continued to perform recitals at care homes and charity events. years ago
first of 75 new private homes have been completed on Illingworth’s notorious Abbey Park estate, helping to transform it into the showpiece it was proclaimed to be 20 years ago. House hunters have managed to buy some of the low-priced houses and the remaining 48 have also been snapped up or reserved at purchase prices of between £27,000 and £37,500.
La Rue is set to co-star with Aiden J Harvey in this year’s Halifax Civic Theatre panto, Aladdin. Danny’s Halifax billing is his pearl anniversary in showbusiness. “This is my 30th year in panto and this one’s going to be a pearler of the show,” he said. Peter Alexander also stars and directs.
years ago Michael Carroll, of Sowerby Bridge, now training for a career in the Marchant Navy, has been commended by the captain of his training ship for rescuing a child from drowning. Michael, whose parents run a general store at Bolton Brow, Sowerby Bridge, was one of a party of trainees ferrying visitors to the training ship in the Severn estuary when the child fell into the water. Michael dived in and brought the child to safety.
Two alternative schemes for modernising and enlarging the Halifax sewage purification works have been approved. One scheme, costing £2.14 million, is for combining the treatment of sewage and industrial waste from Sowerby Bridge and Halifax, while the other, costing £1.7 million is designed to serve Halifax only.
