Council is to consult the community over the future of the former Ridings School, Ovenden, Halifax, which closed in July. Labour councillor­s are keen to turn the school, with its technology block, sports hall, theatre, offices and classrooms, into a creativity centre for people working in the arts, digital and design businesses.

years ago Michael Carroll, of Sowerby Bridge, now training for a career in the Marchant Navy, has been commended by the captain of his training ship for rescuing a child from drowning. Michael, whose parents run a general store at Bolton Brow, Sowerby Bridge, was one of a party of trainees ferrying visitors to the training ship in the Severn estuary when the child fell into the water. Michael dived in and brought the child to safety.

Two alternativ­e schemes for modernisin­g and enlarging the Halifax sewage purificati­on works have been approved. One scheme, costing £2.14 million, is for combining the treatment of sewage and industrial waste from Sowerby Bridge and Halifax, while the other, costing £1.7 million is designed to serve Halifax only.
