Runners in hospice challenge

- By Felicity MacNamara

The dust is still settling on the Holmfield hills from the feet of more than 400 5k and 10k runners as they sped up and down them at the Overgate Hospice Challenge. More than 75 volunteers turned out to help put the event together on Sunday, April 19.

The 10k race was won by Tom Collinge, with Stephen Pywell coming in at the front of the 5k runners.

Caravan Guard returned as the event sponsor and took a team of seven along to take part.

Craig Thompson, marketing director at Caravan Guard. said: ‘We’re hugely proud to sponsor such a well-planned and supported event.

“What was highly noticeable was the camaraderie amongst all participants, organisers and those spectators who lined the route.

“We’d like to thank all those involved for making it such a special day and most importantly raising some very valuable funds for the hospice.’

Event fundraiser Rebecca Gill added: “We would like to extend a massive thank you to all who took part, including our own volunteer James, who completed the 10k in a great time at the fantastic age of 71.

“Sponsorship is still coming in but we hope to raise upwards of £15,000 for the Hospice which is a fantastic achievement so thank you.”

Sponsorship can be handed in at the Hospice at Hullen Edge Road, Elland, at any of the Overgate Shops or by calling 01422 387121.
