Chance to play higher wouldn’t faze Lois
Lois Maynard is confident he could make the step-up if a move to the Football League materialises this summer. The Town midfielder saw a move to League Two Cambridge fall through earlier this season, something which manager Neil Aspin believes affected Maynard’s form for a spell.
He is set to finish the season as Town’s highest league scorer with 11 goals, while only three Halifax players have started more times than him this term.
The 26-year-old admitted he faces an uncertain future but wouldn’t be daunted by moving into full-time football.
“I run out of contract at the end of the season but nothing’s really been discussed yet so I don’t know what’s happening,” he said.
“Going into the Football League has always been my dream so if it was an option I’d be silly not to take it up.
“You just don’t know in football though so I need to wait and see what happens.
“If I do progress higher then I’d be grateful to Halifax for giving me the opportunity to show what I can do.
“I’ve enjoyed it here but I’d be confident I could make the step-up.
“I’ve always had the confidence, I’ve just been waiting for the opportunity so if I do get the chance I’m confident I can take it.”
Maynard said the interest from further up the pyramid was a big compliment.
“We had an offer from Cambridge but I don’t really know too much about it to be honest,” he said.
“It was flattering and it showed I have progressed considering where I joined the club from.
“I just took the confidence from that into the rest of my season and I think that’s helped me get a few more goals.”
Maynard is pleased with his form this season, especially in front of goal, although he admits it hasn’t all been plain sailing.
“Overall there have been performances that could have been a lot better but from a goals point of view I’m really happy,” he reflected.
“I think I’ve got better at understanding my role in the side a bit more.
“I think I came back stronger from being out of the side too.
“Every player needs a kick up the backside. I had one and it helped because it made me realise you can’t be too complacent.
“I’d say it was a gentle kick up the backside but I don’t mind if it’s gentle or not, the main thing is if it’s going to help your game.”
The former Winsford midfielder is satisfied with Halifax’s campaign ahead of their final match against Woking tomorrow.
“It’s been a good season,” he said. “People have to remember we’re a part-time team and we’ve done well.
“If we could have changed a few of the draws into wins then it might have turned out differently.
“Overall I think it’s a successful season.”
Maynard believes Town fans mustn’t get ahead of themselves and raise their expectations too high, which the Halifax man reckons may have happened after last season’s play-off finish.
“With that happening to us in the first year people are going to expect that every year,” Maynard added.
“But we’re still in the league and I think that’s what the club wants is to stay in the league and then finish as high as possible.
“We can only be happy about that.
“I think we’d have taken a top ten finish at the start of the season so we’re happy with that.”
