All set for a golden gala year

- By Felicity Macnamara

Organisers of the 50th Brighouse Charity Gala are promising this year’s anniversary event will be one of the best ever.

There will be something for all the family to enjoy on Saturday when the gala returns for another year.

The day will kick off at 12pm when the vibrant gala procession begins its journey from Garden Road to Wellholme Park, the site of the gala.

From Garden Road, the procession will go down Lightcliffe Road, Halifax Road, into Brighouse town centre along Commmerical Street, along Bradford Road and into the park.

And in a special 50th anniversary celebration, Judy Pilling, the first ever gala queen, will ride in the procession alongside last year’s queen Paige Roderick and this year’s gala queen Imogen Turner.

President Jean Ainley, a lifelong stalwart of the gala, has worked tirelessly to find more than a dozen past gala queens, who will take part in this year’s opening ceremony.

The procession will also include the Brighouse Star Twirlers, Scouts and Guides, the Halifax Bruising Banditas Roller Derby team, Lightclife Preschool, the Hipperholme and Lightcliffe Nursery and more.

The Mayor of Calderdale Lisa Lambert will also appear in the procession alongside the West Yorkshire Police Band, the Huddersfield Brass Band and the Eclipse Band, who will all appear in the arena.

Monitoring the procession will be Huddersfield 59 Squadron Air Cadets and the West Yorkshire 4 x 4 team.

In the arena, the Tigers Children’s Motorcycle Display Team will return for another year as will the Diamond Gymnastics Club and the Brighouse Star Twirlers.

There will be plenty of opportunity to show off pampered pooches at the Companion Dog Show and the day will also include mini go-karts, donkey rides, model train rides, Punch and Judy, a fairground and charity stalls.

And taking to the stage will be the Clifton and Lightcliffe Brass Band, who took part in the first ever gala in 1965, and they will be supported on stage by The Little Jazz Funk Orchestra.
