Going, going, gone! Landmark multi-storey car park blown up
A pile of rubble is all that remains after a car park in Halifax was blown up over the weekend. The demolition of Cow Green was carried out at around 7.50am on Sunday morning.
Contractors used explosives to destroy the car park and it took around five seconds for the building to collapse.
Roads around the site were closed while the demolition work was carried out.
A Calderdale Council spokesperson said: “The Cow Green site is situated on a key gateway into Halifax and so it will be important that its future use is appropriate to its prominence. We are therefore currently examining options for its future use.”
Cow Green was the first multi-storey car park to be built in Halifax in 1971, by the former Halifax Borough Council and the Halifax Building Society.
Calderdale Council announced the closure of Cow Green Car Park due to its poor condition in 2013.
The council said in 2013 that the car park had reached the end of its useful life after structural inspections revealed it was in a “very poor condition”.
The concrete structure provided 226 public parking spaces.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, Coun Barry Collins confirmed in his report to full Council that the site will now be cleared and marketed as a further development opportunity for the Borough.
