The Sorcerer
Halifax Playhouse from Wednesday November 6 to Saturday November 9, daily at 7.30pm plus Saturday matinee at 2.30pm
The Halifax Gilbert andSullivan Society is presenting the delightful Gilbert & Sullivan comic opera The Sorcerer at the Halifax Playhouse later this month.
The story revolves around a magic love potion, served in a special teapot by the the Sorcerer, Mr John Wellington Wells.
On drinking the potion everyone falls in love with the first person they see.
Splendid havoc, confusion and fun then reign.
The story is set in the village of Ploverleigh, whose way of life has been governed for centuries by the church and the two noble families of Sangazure and Pointdextre.
The whole village has been invited to celebrate a marriage between the two families, with the betrothed Aline Sangazure, and the groom
Alexis Pointdextre, who has invited the Sorcerer to add to the proceedings.
Sorcerer Mr John Wellington Wells produces his patented love potion for the villagers, so all the love can be shared around the village.
But will the plans of the thoughtful Alexis go according to plan?
“The wit and humour of Gilbert ensures not, and the resulting fun, along with the wonderful music of Sullivan, makes for a delightful visit to the Playhouse,” said a spokesman for the company.
“A rousing plot, and along with the wit and humour of
Gilbert and the wonderful music of Sullivan, it makes for a truly memorable evening,” he said.
Cast as Aline is Rowena Thornton, and Alexis is played by Leon Wakberg, both of whom have had many successes in many roles.
The delightful role of Dr Daly is played by local favourite Peter Skelton.
