Lions bolster their championsh­ip scores in Race to the Summit trip

STAINLAND LIONS runners were out to boost their points tally in the club’s Fell Running Championsh­ips when they travelled to the Race to the Summit.

There were category wins for James Penson, Doug Penson and Rachel Lumb at Saturday’s rain-lashed race from the Summit Inn.

Three more races remain in the championsh­ips, with the next qualifying event being the

Falkingbri­dge and 2,000 other runners took on the tough Snowdonia Marathon race

Shepherd’s Skyline in Todmorden on Saturday, when David Culpan will compete in his 600th fell race.

Results: James Penson 38:59, Doug Penson 39:18, Leon Severn 39:37, Andrew Earnshaw 39:49, Jim Harris 43:47, David Culpan 43:57, Paul Patrick 44:17, Martin O’Brien 44:29, Rachel Lumb 46:48, Sue Cash 58:56.

Andrew Falkingbri­dge and 2,000 other runners took on the demanding and spectacula­r Snowdonia Marathon on Saturday.

The course takes in several high mountain passes and has more than 2,500 feet of climbing but Falkingbri­dge dug in and crossed the line in 6:00:58.

Ten Lions completed the

Bronte Way 7.5-mile point-topoint fell race on Sunday.

Fresh from competing in the Race to the Summit, Martin O’Brien was the first Lion back with a time of 1:18:37.

The fast and flat Abbey Dash 10k in Leeds attracted a large field on Sunday and Darren Reece led the Lions’ contingent of seven home.

Michelle Rushby and Beverley Day both ran new personal bests, with Beverley clocking her first sub-60 time.

Results: Darren Reece 36:39, Gavin Dodd 40:05, Paul Corns 44:31, Jan King 46:33, Michelle Rushby 53:12, Beverley Day 58:35, Melissa Vincent 66:19.

John Bannister was the only Lion at Sunday’s flat and fast Wistow 10K near Selby and he stopped the clock in a respectabl­e 44:42.

Sunday’s Oldham Half Marathon was raced over a gruelling route and Lions’ Roy Lunt finished in 1:55:46.

n Northowram Pumas had a healthy contingent of runners taking part in last Sunday’s Abbey Dash, in Leeds.
