Please don’t vote solely on Brexit issues

-

Barry Crossland, Elland

I HOPE that the electorate do not vote solely on Brexit and look at other issues which are even more important. I hope that older voters, such as myself, do not vote for their selfish interests and vote for the benefit of their grandchildren.

If Brexit was not so serious it would be a laugh. Boris’s deal has part of the United Kingdom operating under EU law with a border between Northern

Ireland and the rest of the UK. Theresa May did have a red line to preserve the United Kingdom. This is fine for the EU as they no longer have to establish customs and border controls in Southern Ireland. A far more serious issue is climate change. When it comes to environmental matters, which I read about daily, the Conservatives are pretty hopeless. David Cameron went from “the greenest Government ever” to

“get rid of the Green cr*p” in two years and appointed a climate change denier to the Environment Department. In addition, the Conservatives decimated the solar industry, blocked on-shore wind and abandoned zero carbon homes. Labour have always been Greener. In a recent independent survey Labour MPs were five times more likely to vote Green than the Conservatives. Jeremy Corbyn scored 92 per cent and Boris Johnson scored zero!

The Conservatives are not much good at running the economy, failing to balance the books every year and unlikely to do so in the next few years. Their austerity policy has been devastating to the poor and the public sector.

The leading food bank in the country is now eight times larger than when the Conservatives came to power. In spite of dedicated staff, the NHS is in crisis. Downing Street is on red alert, ready to put a political spin on the next bad news. Education is in a mess. Young teachers find the job so stressful that a quarter leave the profession in their first five years.

My philosophy is Green but this election I will support Labour, who have moved in a more environmentally friendly direction.
