Bring it On – The Musical

Square Chapel Arts Centre, from Wednesday, November 13 to Saturday, November 16, daily at 7.15pm with a matinee on the Saturday at 2.15pm Calder Valley Youth Theatre members somersault on to the stage with Bring It On: The Musical.

The youth theatre will entertain with an all-singing, all-dancing, all-acrobatic spectacle of a show. Director and choreograp­her is Debbie Barker and the musical director is David Mitchell. Gymnast Emily Lack features and has helped set the cheer stunts. The cast comprises 32 local children and young people. Former member of the company Bertie Yates helped with the vocal harmony before leaving to study in the Netherland­s and University in Leeds.

Another former member Lizzy Bradley, who now teaches at Todmorden High School, has also been helping with rehearsals.

The set and costumes are made and sourced by society volunteers. The show will feature a sevenpiece live band with profession­al sound and lighting.

Grants have been made by

Hebden Royd Council, the

Rotary Club of Hebden Bridge and the Community Foundation for Calderdale. The cast and volunteers also fundraise.

Hebden Bridge Town Hall Community Project offers support and help through a seven-month period of rehearsals.

Writers of the music include Lin Manuel Miranda, of Hamilton fame.

Inspired by the hit film, the coming-of-age story follows Campbell, cheer captain and most popular girl at the affluent Truman High School.

But, before she can lead her awardwinni­ng squad to another win at the National Championsh­ips, tragedy strikes and she has to spend her final year of high school at the neighbouri­ng inner-city Jackson High School.

Despite having the deck stacked against her, Campbell befriends the hip-hop dance crew girls and, along with their headstrong and hardworkin­g leader, “itgirl” Danielle, manages to form a powerhouse squad for the ultimate competitio­n.
