Manager Wild taking the long-term view ahead of a timely weekend off

-

“LET’S SEE where we are after the next 10 games” is the message from FC Halifax Town boss Pete Wild as The Shaymen take a break from the league.

Halifax’s FA Cup defeat to Harrogate last month means they are without a game this weekend, offering the opportunity to reflect on what has been a remarkable season so far.

Town are third in the National League, just one point off top spot, but are in the midst of a slump in form that has seen them lose four of their last five.

”What’s really pleasing is the fans are sticking with me, the majority of them are sticking with us, and hopefully they’re seeing what we’re trying to do, and that we’re trying to stick with it and do what we can,” said Wild. “We’ll need them. It’s been a good first 20 games, there’s 26 to go. Let’s see where we are after the next 10 games and can we still be in and around the play-offs by the next 10 games, that’s our challenge now.”

Town have also lost four of their last five at home, including Saturday’s 4-2 defeat to Torquay.

“We’ve got to find a way,” said Wild. “Who said it was going to be easy? No-one. We continue to punch well above our weight but we’re desperate to stay there.”

Town could have gone top if they had beaten Torquay.

“I’m not bothered about going top or second or whatever,” said Wild. “Let’s just get to 50 points as quickly as we can, stay in the top-half as long as we can, and you never know what’ll happen from there.”

Wild was due to play a strong side in last night’s West Riding County Cup tie at Yorkshire Amateurs in Leeds, but the game was postponed following a pitch inspection. When asked if this was a good time to have a break, the Town boss said: “Yeah, of course, we’ve had 20 games, we’ve worked so hard to get to where we are. Credit to the lads because they’ve worked their socks off.

“But now is the time to reflect, relax and make sure that, come Woking, we’re ready for the Christmas run-in.

“A couple of people were saying things on the sidelines (on Saturday) that really disappointed me because we’ve done unbelievably well to get where we are, and we’ve got to try and stick with it.”
