ONE OF the best games of the season was played in Halifax Bowling Club’s Autumn Leagues’ Wednesday Evening Fours when Arriva (Les Holmes, Graham Hickey, Robert Holmes, Graham Wilson) and Up the Edge (Chloe Hirst, Tom Gasson, Frank Higgins, Scott Smith) were in opposition.

Arriva took a 2-0 lead before Up the Edge levelled the game at three shots each.

Hirst, the lead player for Up the Edge, set a short jack, two spots up from the T to full length and Holmes, the lead player for Arriva alternated with a maximum mark of T to T and a minimum length jack of 23 metres.

The sides were level at six shots each with two ends to play. Up the Edge bowled to perfection as a team and scored a two and a single to take the game by 9-6.

That result means that Up the Edge lead the division with 14 points from seven games played. Clayton are second with 14 points from nine games and Arriva have dropped down to third place with 12 points from eight games.

In a top of the table game in the Monday Evening Fours, leaders Amethyst (Les Holmes, Pauline Holroyd, Philip Holroyd, Gareth Coates) were indebted to superb play by their number two player, Pauline Holroyd as she was outstanding as her team increased their lead at the top of the table with an emphatic 20-12 win over challengers Up the Edge (Scott Smith, Keith Hatzer, Trevor Gasson, John Sharp).

Amethyst were leading 16-4 before Up the Edge made a mini revival.

In a rearranged game in Division One of the Tuesday Evening Pairs, Pat & Pete (Pat and Peter Grant) played one of their best bowling games of the season as they went into a 6-1 lead against top of the table Bowl You Over (Tom Robertshaw, Andrew Gee).

Holding a four they saw the skip for Bowl You Over, Gee, bowl in for shot to make the score 6-2.

At the start of the last end Pat & Pete held a 9-7 advantage but again Gee bowled superbly for his team to score a three and take the game 10-9. This result leaves Pat & Pete firmly at the bottom of the table with Bowl You Over at the top.

However, Bowl You Over came up against a very determined Dad & Lad (Ken Sharkey, David Laycock). With Sharkey leading to perfection Dad & Lad moved quickly into a 7-1 lead before the leaders, Bowl You Over scored a one, three and a three to take a 8-7 lead with one end to play. Dad & Lad were holding a single before Laycock, with his final bowl, bowled in for a twofor Dad & Lad to inflict on Bowl You Over their first defeat of the season by 9-8.

Beta Blockers (Alan Singleton, Eleanor Carney, Chris Lindsey, John Crewson) lead Division 2 of the Wednesday Fours with a 9-6 victory over high flying Knock Kelly Stars (P Dunderdale, I Wade, K Burnett, Derek Squires).

Fair of Face and Guys & Dolls are next in the table with 10 points from their games played.
