NORTH BRIDGE Leisure Centre in Halifax welcomed 24 teams to the Calderdale Rotary’s Technology Tournament.

Each four person team from the borough’s secondary schools spent a day competing in a task to build a ‘weight powered vehicle’.

The challenge by all teams was to help reduce pollution by designing and building and then testing a vehicle which had to be powered by a 200gram weight.

All materials were provided which included amongst other things, wood of various dimensions, card, pulleys and items to fix pieces together.

There were three levels for the teams, Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced which of course related to the age group of the students.

Elland-based company

sponsored the event and directors of the firm, along with Mayor of Calderdale, Coun Dot Foster, awarded the three trophies to the winning teams.

The Brooksbank School, Elland were named the winners for the Foundation section as well as in the Advanced category.

The Intermediate winners were students from Brighouse High School.

Rotarian Bryan Harkness said: “It was a thoroughly enjoyable day.

“Schools and their staff present said that it was great that the senior schools in Calderdale could get together annually to compete in such a way with Richard Horsfield, the head of Brighouse High, afterwards commenting and thanking Rotary for the opportunities it provides for our young people.”
