Heath expecting tough day at office in derby day clash with Old Crossleyans

-

AFTER A weekend off, Heath return to Yorkshire One rugby by making the short journey to Broomfield to play near neighbours Old Crossleyans in the penultimate game before the Christmas break.

Despite less than ideal weather conditions, training has continued apace with the aim of capitalising on the strong performances on display so far in league outings.

Fitness is high and commitment to the Heath style of play is also notable.

Competition for places remains strong both in the forwards and backs, aided by some good showings in the second XV’s 40-0 victory over Moortown on Saturday.

As with all local derbies, leaders Heath and seventh-placed Crossleyans will be closelymatched, with either team being capable of winning.

The most telling point to note, though, is that Heath have eight try bonus points to Crossleyans’ four: Perhaps indicative of Heath’s strength not just in the pack but also in the backs.

Coach Dave Harrison said: “We took the players off site last week to a MMA Gym to freshen things up. The lads really enjoyed the session put on by Stewart at Warrior MMA, the focus this week is firmly back on rugby and I’m expecting to see a real focus from every player ahead of a derby weekend.”

Backs coach Sid Sales added: “Consistency in selection has been a key factor in the form of the three-quarters.

“A real understanding of how we are wanting to play is evident and pleasing to see the control Dom and Dan give us at halfback coupled with the centre partnership of Willie and Ezra, which is allowing us to play an expansive game and utilise the pace of our back three.”

Meanwhile, Heath’s second string host Wharfedale and after several good recent performances and wins, confidence is high.

Captain Tobias Hinchliffe has assisted the coaches this week to ensure the squad is fully prepared for the encounter and feels that they will turn in a creditable and winning performance on the day.

Senior forwards coach Rich Brown, reflecting on the seconds’ resounding victory over table toppers Moortown last week, said: “I was really impressed as a whole.

“Whilst we are pretty settled in our selection currently, there are several players knocking at the door for first team selection.

Brown added: “Mark Puttick and Coley are doing a fantastic job and with both teams playing to the same systems using the same calls, players are able to shift between the sides seamlessly.”

Heath thirds have a home game against Sandal.

Their last outing was in November when they beat Wath on Dearne 25-17.
