ONE OF the upsets of the season was played out in Halifax Bowling Club’s Autumn Saturday Plate Pairs when the unbeaten leaders T&A (Ann Heley, Trevor Heley) found a determined 2 As (Stella Scully, Anne Mullaney) in opposition.

T&A decided to change their playing pattern with Ann leading the jack and Trevor playing as skip.

With Scully, the lead player for 2 As, leading a long jack and being well supported by her sister Mullaney, the game was nip and tuck as at the start of the last end 2 As held a narrow 7-5 lead.

T&A were holding a three and looked to be winning their 12th consecutive game of the season, before Mullaney, with her last bowl of the game bowled in shot bowl for her side to take the game by 8-5.

Another pairs team to cause an upset were Phoenix (Phil Hallowell, Stuart Coates, who defeated high flying Eskimos (Marian Quick, Mick Jagger) by 10-9.

Quick led superbly but Phoenix managed to restrict the scoring of Eskimos to single shots.

The scores were 4-3 halfway through the game before Coates, the skip for Phoenix found his form as he decided to play strong into the head and at the final end were 9-8 down.

However, at the final end

Phoenix scored a two, which was decided on a measure. A good game with everyone contributing to the close game.

John Beverley gave a masterclass in skip bowling as his team Little & Large (Steve Rothwell, Beverley) faced top of the table Bowl You Over (Tom Robertshaw, Andrew Gee), in a Tuesday Evening Pairs Division One game.

With Robertshaw leading well for Bowl You Over, he made several excellent leads but Beverley, knocked off shot woods, bowled in for additional shots and generally was the master, as Little & Large regained their place at the top of the table with a 10-3 victory.

There was a key game in the Monday Evening Fours when an inspired Madlams (Derek Smith, David Kaye, Ian Smith, Mick Walker) beat leaders Amethyst (Les Holmes, Pauline Holroyd, Philip Holroyd, Gareth Coates) 14-9.

Untouchables (Dave Brown,

Alan Horbury, Michael Calvert) were held to a 12-12 draw by Changers (Ann Ranton, Lynda Robson, Elspeth Hartley) in their latest game.

Untouchables are currently the favourites to be promoted into Division One after Christmas with Knock Kelly Stars joining them.

The club are now taking entries for the John Dunn Shield, a singles knockout competition, and the Sheila Holbrook Pairs, a knockout pairs competition.

Both competitions are played over an hour. The entry sheets are in the indoor bowling hall.

There is a Monday morning session from 11am to noon for anyone wishing to have a taste of indoor bowling.

The Autumn League Indoor Bowling Prize Presentation will be held on Friday, December 20 at 7.30pm.
