Captain’s Column

HAVING THE FA Trophy campaign kick-off on Saturday rekindles memories of winning the competition in 2016.

We were on a good run at the end of the season, we were playing well.

We knew they’d got promoted the week before and they’d been partying. There was no real pressure on us, we just played our game.

On the day I thought we were really good and fully deserved to win.

We went into it being real underdogs.

It was a long couple of days. We went down there two days before, although it was all paid for by the FA so we stayed at a really nice hotel and trained on good pitches.

It was a really good experience, and it was a great turnout from the Halifax fans.

For the goal, it was poor clearance from their defender and I saw Scott McManus coming onto it.

I saw the keeper was off his line and as soon as he hit it, you knew it was going in, although it seemed to be in slow motion.

It was written in the stars that Macca would score it, being the legend that he is. But obviously he then did his knee in the game so he probably had the best moment in his life followed by one of the worst.

He was great to play with, probably the best left-back I’ve played with.

I played with two of my three ankle ligaments detached so I don’t know how I got through the game!

There’s a lot of good memories from that day I definitely want to do well in the competition again.

It’ll stay with me forever, no-one can ever take that away.

The only downside of that season was that we got relegated, but I think winning the FA Trophy was the springboard for us getting back up the following season.

It’s the highlight of my career so far, you can’t beat playing at Wembley and winning. Good memories but I’m only 29 and I want to make some more.
