It’s the season of goodwill and it’s children offering glad tidings and hope for future

-

THEY SAY it is better to give than receive.

But in Calderdale this Christmas both come to the fore as we highlight two heart warming stories from inspirational children this festive season.

Five-year-old Jacob Scrimshaw can finally give his family a hug after becoming the first child in the UK to have a functioning prosthetic arm fixed above the elbow.

The little boy, who was born with part of his arm missing, can now look forward to an amazing Christmas with his dreams answered after his family set out earlier this year to raise money needed through a crowd funding appeal as robotic prosthetics are usually not available for children on the NHS.

Elsewhere charitable youngster Edie Jones is adding to the season of goodwill by helping to organise a Christmas dinner for people that don’t have anyone to enjoy Christmas Day with.

The nine-year-old’s campaign of cheer has gathered momentum with support from her Elland school mates, family and local church which is opening up its hall on December 25 as a result. It’s the little things that matter and simple kind thoughts from ones so young can mean so much to the lonely or those in need in our community.

Last month the Courier unveiled its Helping Hand campaign to shout out for the amazing staff, fundraisers, patients, families and volunteers connected with Calderdale’s incredible Overgate Hospice.

It needs more than £9,000 a day to run and relies heavily on the support of businesses, individuals and organisations in this district to continue helping families here.

There are many deserving causes to support and many people, young and old, that need our help not just at Christmas but thoughout the year. So enjoy the festive break; be kind to each other and look forward to 2020 with hope.

I asked my family if we could make a Christmas dinner for people that don’t have anyone to enjoy Christmas Day with - Edie Jones, nine
