Brods keep the heat on their local rivals in title race with win at Bridlington

-

OLD BRODLEIANS continued their recent good form in Yorkshire One with another high scoring win on the East Coast, winning 41-5 at Bridlington.

The result keeps the Woodhead club in second place in the division going into the Christmas break, just two points shy of local rivals Heath.

Brods camped in the home side’s 22 and following several penalties in their red zone Bridlington had to defend their line.

They were successful until Joe Armitage, the Brods scrum half, forced the Brid player coach and number 8 into a handling error and Armitage pounced to touch down on the loose ball and score the initial points of the match after 15 minutes play. Town converted from the touchline against a strong wind for a 7-0 lead.

Brods continued to dominate the game and played most of the rugby in the Bridlington 22. The pressure told after 25 minutes when Bennie Pritchett broke from the base of a ruck to drive to the Bridlington posts. The defenders couldn’t hold the Brods captain as he twisted in the tackle to score under the posts and Town extended the score with the conversion, 14-0.

Brods were patient in their build up, moving the ball left and right and retaining the ball through the phases.

Pete Williams went close with a strong drive in centre field and the ball was then moved left and Jasper Ayerton was able to finish the move with a final powerful surge to the left hand corner.

With six minutes remaining of the first half, Matty Hoyle beat several defenders to touch down for the Brod’s bonus point try and extend the score to 24-0.

But from the kick off Brid finally put together an attack and beat a resting defence to score wide on the right for a half-time score of 24-5.

From the restart, Brid put together several attacks, but the Brods defence held firm with the back row of Hoyle, Sykes and Wroot outstanding.

Cameron Wroot and Michael Briggs relieved the pressure with some strong runs down the middle of the park and Dom Georgiou entered the line to cut through the defence and extend the score to 29-5.

Brods were back in command and Kyle Millward was rewarded for his outstanding effort when he refused to be tackled on his way to the line.

Brods finished the game with a Matty Hoyle try, who chased his brother’s well-placed kick behind the defence to touch down in the corner.

DOMINANT DEFENCE set the tone as Brods under 14s 34-0 Cup victory against local rivals Old Rishworthians.

Thom Shaw scored twice, with Matthew Thornton, Thomas Richardson, Woody Walker and Ben Hall also crossing.
