A big thank you for clean up help
A GROUP of students taking part in The National Citizen Service from Calderdale College undertook a mass clean up at Halifax Boxing Sports and Fitness Club, a not-for-profit facility which helps disadvantaged people in the community.
The area around the boxing club has suffered from excessive fly-tipping over the years.
In the summer four-hundred young people from NCS tackled the fly-tipping, removing debris and improving the paths and cutting back vegetation around the boxing club.
Carrying on from this amazing work, 15 students braved the weather removing debris that couldn’t be moved during the summer due to overgrown vegetation.
From carpets, mattresses, tires and household waste, the group removed approximately ten tonnes of debris, which took the council 27 wagon trips to move.
Bethany Donkin, Graduate and Social Action Coordinator at NCS, said: “The group of students have gone through the Autumn NCS programme here in Calderdale. Their journey commenced with an actionpacked residential in The Lake District, followed by workshops and training back in Calderdale and a fancy dress sports day fundraiser in aid of local charity; Andy’s Man Club. For their final week of NCS the group wanted to give back to their community to show that young people care and can make a difference.
“Despite the weather, the group truly transformed the area surrounding the club which Mick Rowe, the owner of the boxing club was extremely thankful for.”
