The Rotary Club of Elland met on Monday, January 13 at Baines Hall, Elland Cricket Club, at 7.30pm. President David Best called the meeting to order and welcomed everybody, then read out the list of apologies for absence of which there were six. There were 10 members and one associate member present and there were no visits to other clubs reported. There were five boards circulated amongst the members the first for the Valentines Ball to be held at Baines Hall on February 15, the second for Youth Speaks competitio­n to be held on February 25. The third board was looking for volunteers for Mock Interviews to be held at Brooksbank School, the fourth board was for the Primary School Quiz to be held on March 18, and the last board was for the Galactic Golf on January 27. Rtn David Edwards reported that due to lack of interest he had cancelled the golf evening but as there were a lot of protests at this he was reinstatin­g it.

The subject of the school quiz was brought up as not all schools have responded to the invitation and that was being attended to. Then the subject of the mock interviews was brought up and it was stated that more volunteers were needed.

Next on the agenda was the school choir festival and it appears that as Claire from St Patrick’s will not be retiring prior to Easter but later in the year and therefore she is able to attend this event which could now take place after Easter involving four schools.

On Tuesday, January 14 Roger Hitchen, a long-time teacher and lecturer in art and design, brought along a selection of his beautifull­y-crafted portraits. He explained his preparator­y work and showed the great variety of materials and applicator­s he uses. He demonstrat­ed how he starts with the subject’s eyes and, using Panpastels and pastel pencils, gradually builds up very soft tones and effects. On Tuesday, January 28 a ‘Help and Advice’ night will be hosted by Matthew Evans.

This is usually a light-hearted evening and - for comment and advice - each attendee provides two pictures, fully complete
