Sunshine greets Snails for championships’ first round
THE 2020 Sowerby Bridge Snails Championship series kicked-off in sunshine at the West Lancashire Hospice 10k.
The race, based around Great Harwood near Blackburn, is the first of 14 races in which members need to complete six to be eligible for awards in one of the six divisions.
The series covers races across the north of England and beyond at multiple distances.
Chris Hanley was the first Snail to complete the race in a time of 45:23, followed by Jamie Lund and Nathan Pollard, both under 50 minutes.
Rebecca Pollard was the first female Snail to finish in a time of 51:49, followed by Jess and Cath Neil both under the hour mark. Snails’ founder Jodie Smith clocked a personal best time of 1:10:35.
The second round takes place at the end of February at the Huddersfield 10k.

n Halifax Harriers ladies won the team prize at the Inskip Half Marathon for the third year in a row.
Like last year, it was April Caufield who led the ladies home in 1:27:15, some 30 seconds faster than last year. Helen Ward ran a personal best 1:32:38 to finish first F35 and Erika Nightingale completed the team in a personal best of 1:41:22.
Harriers had 24 runners in the race, and first back for the club was Ryan Barker in 1:22:14, closely followed by Will Stewart (1:24:54) and Andrew Wiggins (1:25:35). One second behind was James O’Rourke in a personal best of 1:25:36.
Fred Carver led the field in the U20s, clocking 1:36:33 in his first race over the half marathon distance. David Ingle was first M55 in 1:28:47 while husband and wife, Raymond and Susan Hall were both winners of the 70 years age group in 1:44:13 and 2:12:26 (club F70 record).
