& other Lightcliffe stories.’

The tales which have been uncovered by The Friends of Lightcliffe Churchyard are many, varied, and of great interest.

They range from characters in ‘Gentleman Jack’ through to soldiers in many wars. Included were the stories of an aged General who won fame in Scotland; a young man who joined the forces under a false name; and a sailor who lost his life on a very dangerous ship. A tragic honeymoon death was also explained.

The next Antiquarian Lecture will be delivered at The Caygill Rooms, The Piece Hall, at 7.30pm on Tuesday, February 18 when David Baker will speak about ‘Such a State of Perfection: John Varley Roberts as Organist and Choirmaster of Halifax Church, 1868-1882’, with musical excerpts.

New members will be most welcome.

Sowerby Division Trefoil Guild

We started the year with a 12th night lunch enjoyed by us all. This week we held our annual meeting, which went well. Having confirmed that they were willing to stand again, all officers were re-elected.

Our monthly January meeting followed, with the main emphasis on planning the programme for the year.

This was very successful and we hope to confirm our plans in February.

Next month we are gathering for lunch to celebrate a member’s birthday.
