Yorkshire One leaders win comfortably on east coast

- Sta ff reporter

YORKSHIRE ONE leaders Old Brodleians returned home from their trip to Goole with a comfortable 19-5 victory and four vital league points.

Brods took the game to their hosts from the kick-off and strong running from Phil Town and Ryan Harris took the game deep into Goole territory.

The early pressure earned its reward when Joe Kafatolu broke the defensive line to touch-down, Georgiou converting.

Goole came back well though, and in a highly competitive period, a skirmish off the ball resulted in Brods’ Dom Georgiou receiving a yellow card for foul play and the Goole scrum-half being shown a red card for striking.

Brods’ forward domination was clear and they proceeded to rumble upfield using their strong mauling technique to their advantage.

Having gained further territory near the Goole line a well controlled lineout was formed and Bob Sykes’ excellent work was rewarded when he scored, Georgiou again converting to give Brods a 14-0 lead at half time.

Brods continued to dominate the game in the second half. However, the Goole defence was stubborn and the home side played with great spirit without being able to break down Brods’ own defensive line.

The Hipperholme boys struck again midway through the half when Cam Wroot made good ground before releasing Jasper Ayrton against a stretched defence and the young winger crossed in fine style.

Another product of the Brods youth system entered the fray in the shape of Elliot Craven who has just returned to the club after his time at university and travelling in Australia.

As full time approached

Goole threw everything at the Brods defence.

Two yellow cards for Alex Dawson and Ryan Harris didn’t help and eventually Goole produced a well worked try with a kick to the corner behind a stretched defence.

On Saturday, Brods travel to Dinnington, who are always difficult to beat on their unique pitch. Brods enjoyed success there last season with a 32-18 victory and this season Brods won the home fixture 24-10.

Brods third team, the Beavers visited local rivals Crossleyans’ second team and produced a good display against a strong side before losing out 43-24.

In difficult conditions, Brods U14s overpowered visitors Huddersfield with a score in excess of 40 points. The U17s Colts entertained Rotherham in a league game and won 34-6, the U15s girls prevailed 17-5 at West Park Leeds and the U15s boys romped to a 32-0 win at Huddersfield.

BRODS’ YORKSHIRE One rivals Heath, who now sit second, host Pontefract.

“We are probably the better for a week off,” said coach Dave Harrison. “Training has gone well, despite the weather.”

Heath’s second team travel to Bradford and Bingley.
