Dover and out as Shaymen cap an emotional night with a win

- Tom Scargill

FC HALIFAX Town boss Pete Wild praised his side’s grit and determination after their 4-2 win against Dover on an emotional night at The Shay

Town are now unbeaten in seven games and sit fourth in the National League table following the win.

“I thought it was nip and tuck,” said Wild. “I thought it would be, they’ve got a lot of height and a lot of aggression.

When we did get going I thought we looked a threat every time we attacked

“I knew they’d put us under a lot of pressure aerially and put a lot of balls in our box.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. It took us about 10 minutes to get going, we were sluggish.

“But when we did get going I thought we looked a threat every time we attacked, and to score another four goals is pleasing. And we maybe could have had more.”

Three days after the tragic death of former Halifax midfielder Jordan Sinnott, his former side put in a performance to be proud of.

After a beautifully observed minute’s silence, an even firsthalf seemed to be petering out at 1-1 after Devante Rodney’s low drive from 10 yards had been cancelled out by Jerome Binnom-Williams’ own goal when he turned a low cross from the left into his own net.

But the Town defender atoned for that just before the break with a thumping header from Jack Redshaw’s corner.

Dover fought back again to equalise through Michael Woods after a nice through ball by Jai Reason.

The game then built into a thrilling crescendo, thanks in no small part to substitute Jamie Allen, against his former club.

Halifax took the lead for the third time in comical fashion as Cameron King’s driven cross was whacked by one Dover defender straight at another, Will De Havilland, before the ball billowed the same net BinnomWilliams’ own goal had nestled in earlier.

Allen then twice almost put Dover out of reach, first when Cameron King laid the ball back to him inside the box, and then when his explosive pace saw him sprint past the beleagured De Havilland, but he was twice denied by keeper Yussuf Mersin.

But he set-up Rodney after another lightning burst into the box, and his strike partner produced a calm finish to the left of the penalty spot to put the result beyond doubt.
