Jones hits six as Halifax pour more misery on bottom side

- Mark Berry

HALIFAX MEN’S firsts took no prisoners in their home clash with Yorkshire Premier strugglers University of Leeds on Sunday.

After seeing Saturday’s match fall foul of the weather, Halifax made a rampant return to action 24 hours later by registering a 16-0 victory over the bottom side.

Michael Jones netted six, Josh Barron added a hat-trick, Cameron Kew, Casey Marshall and John Horsley scored two a piece and Andy Kaye wrappedup the win.

In Division One, the second team lost 3-2 away at Grimsby but played well with a depleted squad. Players moving up from the lower teams did well but they were unable to recover from 3-0 down despite an excellent last half-hour in which Peter Balmforth and Rhys Hancock hit the target.

The third team suffered a 4-2 reverse at Leodis Leeds in a hard-fought Division Four North encounter.

Bryn Hans scored both goals and Tom Mitchell-Hewitt took the man of the match award for solid defensive work.

The B team, promoted last time out, raised their game again to win two of their three sets of games.

A 5-0 win against York, a 4-0 triumph over Slazenger and a 3-1 loss to Huddersfield was an excellent return and is likely to be enough to secure their second promotion.

Evelyn Rooke scored five goals and Isla Flesher Smith and Savannah Earle added two apiece. The coaches were unsure who scored the final goal as both Olivia Scholefield and Edie Jones were involved.

The U10s A team were undefeated in the latest round of Yorkshire Youth League fixtures, playing some fantastic hockey.

Unlucky to be demoted into Division Four last time out they bounced straight back and three wins and a draw saw them win the February tournament.

A late goal from Lucy Hampshire earned Halifax victory over Harrogate and she hit the target again early on in the clash with Sheffield.

Some great defending by Jessica Sanderson, Darcy Hancock and Scarlett Dodds meant Ava Greenwood was not troubled in goal and after great work from Connie Wood, Grace Boam extended the lead.

Bridlington had several older girls and provided tough opposition but Halifax gained the upper hand when Sanderson setup Boam to score.

Halifax looked a little more unsettled in their final match against Thirsk, who broke the deadlock but Boam completed a tournament hat-trick.

A fine save from Greenwood ensured that the game finished as a draw.
