Junior football club in Hebden Bridge is left without anywhere to play

-

A JUNIOR football club in Hebden Bridge has been left without anywhere to play after the Calder Valley was struck by Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis on consecutive weekends.

Hebden Bridge Saints Junior AFC’s various pitches were all flooded by the recent torrential weather which battered the region over the last two weekends.

So the club is holding a race night at Mytholmroyd Cricket Club on Friday, February 28 to raise funds to put towards pitch maintenance and for pitch fees for artificial pitches so the teams can continue to play football.

Under 10’s coach Simon Kendall said: “We have a number of pitches we use in different locations.

“There’s one at Brearley, one at Burnley Road School, and one elsewhere in Hebden Bridge, but they’ve all been severely affected by the flooding.

“Especially Brearley, which was completely out of action and had a lot of debris left on there, which we’re trying to clean up.

“There are very few other places to play so we’re trying to find some 3G or 4G pitches at places like Calderdale College or Trinity Academy, but they are quite expensive.

“So we need to raise funds to put towards that and make sure we keep the kids playing football, which is what we’re all about.”

The club has 16 teams ranging from under 7s to under 16s, and has around 160 players.

It is the only junior football club based in the Upper Calder Valley.

Any race night sponsorship enquiries can be made to Simon via email to simongkendall@hotmail.com or by calling 07818 286197.

Tickets for the night can also be purchased for £5 per ticket and this includes a pie & pea supper.

All proceeds will go towards Hebden Bridge Saints.

If your sports club has been affected by the recent flooding, you can let us know about it by emailing sport@halifaxcourier.co.uk or getting in touch via Twitter or Facebook.
