Funding boost for homeless

- Sally Burton

A SUM of £25,000, raised to help the homeless by the Big Calderdale Sleepout, is to be doubled by a Halifax-based company.

Vital funds from the event in which 228 people camped overnight in the Piece Hall, are for Calderdale SmartMove, that supports homeless and vulnerable people.

The money will now be match funded by the Leo Group, a specialist in animal by-products and renewable energy.

SmartMove helps those struggling to find accommodation, and supports people in living independently. In 2019, 96 per cent of people supported by

SmartMove were still in accommodation a year later.

Cassie Irving, Leo Group’s PR manager said: “We’re delighted to support such a vital local cause. The fact 228 people swapped their warm homes for a cold floor, to highlight the plight of those who are homeless, demonstrates what an important service this is.”

The charity will use the donation for starter packs with basic household items such as kettles, emergency aid parcels for those sleeping rough, and a bond scheme for people requiring housing. Funds will also help provide crisis grants for families in need of immediate housing or for people with young babies who need items such as a pram or clothing.

Any money left will be used to develop a new mental health course for SmartMove’s clients and other vulnerable individuals , working alongside Unmasked Mental Health.

Stuart Rumney, CE at Calderdale SmartMove, said: “We’re overwhelmed with the incredible support from Leo Group. It will make a huge difference to our clients needing support at what is often the lowest point in their lives.”
