YOUR PICTURE OF THE DAY

A view towards Elland from Brookfoot Bridge, by Anthony Greenwood

and waiting on those reforms. Like o many of the Prime Minister’s promises we are still waiting to know what those reforms are.

All we hear about is more talking and further delay until 2025 before any reforms might be implemented.

Local councils are forced to rely on inadequate one – off funding; a government “sticking plaster” that leave council tax payers having to pay the governments’ extra two per cent on top for the Social Care Precept.

Coun Evans suggests adopting a new approach “which could help alleviate the situation.”

The Cabinet is always open and accessible for any new ideas and would welcome any discussions on this.

I would say though I am unsure how this resolves the funding crisis and without any trace of complacency, mention that last autumn we were chosen from amongst all other UK councils for a delegation of social workers from South Korea to visit to hear about our innovative work in areas such as our community social work.

Only last week Calderdale Council for the second year running has been ranked as one of the top UK councils for adult social care, the only Yorkshire council to do so.

Despite all the challenges we face in increasing demand with an aging population and challenging budget savings, I am proud of our dedicated staff providing care and support to Calderdale’s most vulnerable people.

Minister didn’t even bother to do that.

But Rebecca Long-Bailey’s visit to Mytholmroyd was different. She understands that our flood response has been undermined by a decade of austerity and she gets that we need a statutory duty to respond to flooding.

She knows that, for us, climate change is an industrial issue.

We’re on the front line of the climate emergency – and Rebecca has the right plan to fight it.
