Sewing bee Lynn is helping Overgate one stitch at a time

- Sal Wilcox

LYNN LEADBEATER has spent her lockdown creating beautiful cushions in a bid to raise money for Overgate Hospice in Elland.

Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, Lynn volunteered two days a week in the hospice’s Elland charity shop.

Due to Government restrictions, the hospice has had to close all 14 of its charity shops and cancel all of its fundraising events during the busy Spring/ Summer fundraising season.

Yet despite losing these major sources of income, the charity still needs to find £11,600 every single day, in order to continue its care for vulnerable people in our community.

‘I am truly grateful that I can play my part in helping the hospice’s amazing team’

So far Lynn has raised over £350 by selling her cushions on Facebook Marketplace.

Lynn said: “Since taking early retirement from Nestle in 2015, I decided I wanted to help a local charity that was close to home.

“My mum used to volunteer for Overgate after we lost my dad. Mum has been involved there for 13 years.

“The day I started at Elland charity shop was the day my life changed. I have met so many new friends and raise as much as possible. The lovely manager, Rachel, supports us all in our family lives.

“We never know what will happen to us or any of our family members in later life and also after we lose a loved one getting support from them all. I am truly grateful that I can play my part in helping the hospice’s amazing team.”

Sarah Page, Volunteer Services Coordinator says ‘Our wonderful volunteers have continued to be so supportive during these very unsettling last few weeks. A few of them have actively done some fundraising for us; others have been suggesting fundraising ideas, but so many of them have been emailing and ringing to offer words of support and hope, showing their genuine concern for the Hospice.

“It has been truly heartwarming. We really do appreciate each and every volunteer and are looking forward to getting back to normal and seeing them all again, as soon as it is safe to do so.”
