YOUR PICTURE OF THE DAY

sounds harsh and totally insensitive, but governments role is to protect their citizens, and at the moment they are presiding over a policy that in the long run is going to cause a higher number of younger, economically valuable, deaths, as a result of an economic slump.

Unemployment increases drug addiction, alcohol abuse, domestic violence, divorce rates, crime, and suicide. Add to that, delayed treatment for cancers and other medical conditions, then more younger people will die in the long term than the old from Covid 19.

Taking all this into consideration one would expect this virus to be extremely deadly to everyone, but this is not the case, less than 400 under 45s have died from covid 19 and probably a significant number had other health issues.

It’s total madness to sacrifice the lives of the younger generation to protect those most at risk from covid 19, the over 70s. In World War Two our grandparents sacrificed their lives for the benefit of future generations, this lockdown is doing the opposite.

Solution: We immediately need to fully open up the economy to the under 50s.

Those above 50 can apply targeted social distancing, when out and about. Stores could be open to the over

50s at set times, all on public transport should wear masks and again special times could be allocated for the over 50s to travel. Only the under

50s would be allowed into pubs, clubs and restaurants. Furthermore, by opening up to the under 50s we will hit herd immunity in that group quicker without risking the NHS.

I’m sure they would step up to the plate. We need action now
