Keeping Halifax station gateways plans on track

- Ian Hirst

NEW CONCEPT designs of how Halifax train station could look in the future have been released.

The Halifax Station Gateway (HSG) project aims to deliver a transformational redevelopment of Halifax railway station.

The plans include a new twostorey station building, an iconic pedestrian footbridge and improvements to walking and cycling connectivity.

The latest concept drawings have been released showing how the station and surrounding areas could be transformed.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Resources, Councillor Jane Scullion, said: “Exciting proposals to transform Halifax Rail Station are moving forward with the outline business case for funding for the project submitted to the West Yorkshire Combined Authority in April 2020.

“Following discussion at upcoming meetings of the West Yorkshire and York Investment Committee and the Combined Authority, the next steps for the project would be to develop detailed designs and further project development work.

“At present the plans are conceptual and the final design will be consulted upon fully in the next stages of the project.

“Initial proposals include a new two-storey station building, a new footbridge and features to improve walking and cycling connectivity.

“Improving the facilities at the station would contribute to a better travel experience, increasing accessibility and allowing for economic growth. It would also help create a positive first impression for visitors to Halifax.”

The new train station would include additional facilities and retail units.

It would be accessed from the underpass, ground level car park and first floor via the proposed town footbridge. This would require the demolition of the existing station building and access bridge.

The plans also include the reconfiguration of platform 1 and 2.

This would create improved pedestrian space by reconfiguring the platform access and waiting area.

Part of the existing Eureka! car park (to the north) will be redesigned to provide drop-off facilities and taxi pick up for rail passengers.

The outline business case for the project was submitted in April 2020 to West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

To support the outline business case the Council ran a satisfaction survey about Halifax rail station, which will be used to inform the proposals.

As the proposals progres a public consultation will be launched, providing the opportunity for people to learn more about the plans and have their say. Following this consultation the Council will submit the planning application for the scheme and develop the full business case.
