one housing estate and another one planned. Need more building near Hebden - lots of rural land to build on instead of taking the few views we have away nearer town.

The council has put a housing inspector hired by the government who has said not enough houses have been planned. If it was left to the government then Calderdale would be trashed.

School leaders and campaigners have urged the Government not to miss a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reform the nation’s education system in wake of the coronavirus pandemic. Readers shared their thoughts on the opportunity.
Yes I could not agree more. A revolution in our education system is long overdue. However there is no way that the authorities will give any ground to this. Changes will be temporary, it would cost too much to bother prioritising our children’s and teachers’ mental health. When this is over they will return us to the full testing, examination and inspection regimen which is going to fail everyone on everything.

As well as looking at the curriculum it could be an opportunity to examine the school day and academic year. Why does the school year start in September? Why a long break between the end of July and September? In fact that was a bit of bribery when schooling was made compulsory back in the 19th century so that kids would be available to gather in the harvest. Also why does the school day have to start at 9am and finish at about 3pm? Why not start at 7.30am and end at 12.30pm so that afternoons can be devoted to sports and cultural activities?
