Operation to clamp down on off-road bikers

- Sam McKeown

OFF-ROAD POLICE officers have launched an operation to clamp down on ‘nuisance’ bikers in Calderdale.

Following complaints from communities in the Upper Valley area, officers took part in a deterrent operation last week to deter illegal bikers around Height Road in Pecket Well and Mount Skip, as well as Rishworth Moor and Gorpley Moor.

Officers were joined by Calderdale Council’s mobile CCTV unit, as well as members of the public who were acting as spotters.

Inspector Ben Doughty, from Calderdale Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We’re aware of the issues offroad bikes have been causing in this area and have been listening to residents’ concerns.

“We’re aware there are issues in other parts of the district, including the Lower Valleys and Halifax North. “Not only are bikes causing a nuisance, they’re also a safety risk, especially when they aren’t driven responsibly – as most of them aren’t.

“They also cause damage to people’s property, often with a cost to the land owner.”

Police have pledged prosecuting those involved in the anti-social use of off-road bikes will remain a priority following recent waves of illegal activity.

“I’d remind those that think they can ride illegally that they risk having their bike seized, points on their licence and a prosecution,” said Inspector Doughty.

“These operations reiterate our commitment to tackling the issue and we will continue to make it tough for those who think it’s acceptable to ride offroad bikes illegally and dangerously.”

Halifax Courier reader, Martin Law said: “Wainstalls has been like a cross between the Isle of Man TT Race and Wacky Races. Another reader Penny Jowett said: “The Wheatley area, quad bikes [are a] pain in the backside.”

Police say anyone who has concnerns about nuisance bikers should contact their neighbourhood officers on 101.
