Tributes paid to former Halifax RLFC chairman Tony Gartland
HALIFAXRLFChaveannounced the death of their former chairman Tony Gartland.
A statement on the club’s website said: “A long-time club supporter who led the consortium that took over the club in 1990.
“Under Tony’s leadership Halifax became a major force in Rugby League culminating in automatic choice for inclusion when Super League started in with his admiration of Rugby League, brought stability and success to his boyhood club.
“Tony was Inducted to the Rugby League Roll of Honour in 2007.
“Rest In Peace Tony and thank you for all your work and investment you gave to Halifax RLFC.”
Mr Gartland contributed around £750,000 to help kick start the Community Foundation for Calderdale.

Foundation, said: “He was a very supportive and visionary person. He understood what the Foundation was trying to achieve, and put his money where his mouth is.
“He served on the board, as did his late wife, and made a significant contribution to get the Foundation off the ground.”
Tributes have been paid to Mr Gartland on the club’s Facebook page.
Gary Mercer wrote: “Top man and very passionate Rugby
League supporter and Gent for Halifax RL. Rest in Peace Tony.”
Elizabeth Owen commented: “Tony was a wonderful man. He shall be a missed by Halifax people. Am so sorry to have seen this. My heart goes out for his family.”
