Why so many book shelves?

IS it me, or is there some sort of ‘who has got the biggest bookshelf ’ competition running at the moment on TV?

The bookshelf seems to be in the background on many TV interviews of MPs, experts and celebrities. Is it to signal how intellectual or intelligent they all think they are, or to impress us viewers, or both?
