2 Robin Hood’s Bay

East Coast

Like all the Treasure Trails, it is self-guided. This one is a smuggler’s trail, highlighti­ng Robin Hood’s Bay’s link with the illicit trade rife in the 18th century.

As you follow the Trail route, there are clues set on existing buildings, permanent features and monuments to discover the location of the buried treasure. The Trail starts in the car park in Station Road and winds down through narrow pedestrian streets to the coast before returning uphill to the start point.

Market Square and takes you around the small market village most famed for its castle’s links to Harry Potter. The route explores Baliffgate, St Michael’s Church and Pottergate as you come into contact with life gone by from every century for the past 700 years.

The route takes you along to North Sunderland and back to the harbour. The Amble Scandal Treasure Trail explores the riverside and dockside areas, as well as a wooden pier. A section of the coastline also forms part of the route. Wylam Waggonway
