YOUR PICTURE OF THE DAY

Red Beck Valley by Michael Halliwell

-

Instead of going to the pub more people will entertain at home, being made aware during lockdown of the savings. Redundancies will affect spending.

Does Calderdale Council now need to work on a recovery plan for Halifax? One that will have a wider benefit for all Calderdale? I would really like to see a cross-party group formed to work on this specific problem.

Boris Johnson PM has raised the question that shops should be turned into homes and larger town buildings into apartments.

Calderdale Proposed Local Plan: Why not create homes on the inner periphery of Halifax town centre and other town brownfield Sites and encourage condensation of the retail hub. (I have spoken on this at Full Council in the past).

Could this save much of the contentious proposed development on greenbelt, ie in Greetland & Stainland ward? Brownfield is costly to develop but there are Government grants to support this.

If the great architecture in Halifax town centre is left to crumble much longer, demolition will sadly be the only answer (as you know, many upper stories have now turned into pigeon lofts anyway!)

This would revitalise the centre of Halifax and tidy up poor run-down areas

We need to stall the increase of empty shops in the centre of the town. Is it better to have one vibrant high street, rather than the odd open shop between many closed premises?

To support the visitor experience to the Piece Hall, Eureka, town hall, minster and library, we also need to green and cream in Cooper Black)

Lloyds Bank (grade II listed building) in the centre of Halifax is not to renew their lease and the premises are now on sale for £875,000 with Walker Singleton Commercial Unit. Like the former Post Office premises, it is one of the only remaining purpose-built premises in the town. Closure will no doubt follow as in Elland, etc.

We will soon be in what will feel like a post-war situation and drastic measures will be required.

People will not come into Halifax if there is nothing here but empty run-down premises. If we had a vibrant, aesthetic, condensed hub would this create the atmosphere that compels people to visit? West Vale is a good example of this.

My proposal would also fit the requirement for muchneeded accommodation as designated on the Calderdale Proposed Local Plan.

‘We will soon be in what will feel like a post-war situation and drastic measures will be required’
