Extra road closures brought in to help social distancing in centres

-

MORE CHANGES – including some road closures – are being introduced by Calderdale Council to help people safer when out shopping, queueing, walking and cycling as lockdown has been eased.

The council says the extra measures are being introduced to add to those brought in to complement work being done by businesses when many more of them were allowed to reopen after being forced to close for the first three months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This week has seen further steps include temporary 24-7 closures at part of Bridge Street and Calder Street, Todmorden, except for loading, and from next Monday, July 27, part of Southgate, Elland, will see no through traffic allowed between 10am and 4pm daily, plus temporary suspension of parking bays 24-7, to free up space for social distancing.

The council adds that within two weeks no through traffic 24-7 will be allowed at Old Lane, Halifax.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet member for Regeneration and Resources, Coun Jane Scullion (Lab, Luddenden Foot), said temporary road closures and the removal of parking on some roads were being introduced to help people stay two metres apart to reduce the spread of COVID-19, the council’s priority.

“Unfortunately COVID-19 will be part of our lives for months to come, so to protect people’s health and wellbeing and to support local businesses, we’re making our town centres as safe as possible for everyone.

“We hope this helps people feel more confident to go out and about in our local area.”
