Young writer’s royal exchange with the Queen

- Sam McKeown

A BUDDING young royalist has been exchanging letters with the Queen and Prince Philip during lockdown.

Zoe Bedford, 10, of Kilnhurst Road, Todmorden, was inspired to send birthday letters to the two royals after reading a children’s book written by comedian David Walliams.

Within a month of sending the letters - one in April and the other in June - the 10-yearold received replies from the lady-in-waiting on behalf of the heads of the monarchy, whose natal celebrations both fell within the coronavirus pandemic.

Her dad, Stefan Bedford said: “She always been interested in the monarchy since a very young age.

“But the inspiration for sending the letters came from David Walliams’ Gangsta Granny book.

“The story is about a granny who tries to heist the crown jewels from the Tower of London.

“Zoe loved the book and we actually went to the Tower of London last year so she could get a glimpse of the crown jewels.

“In her letter to the Queen she mentioned the Gansta Granny story, and she was replied with how wonderful it was to see a young girl so interested in the history of the monarchy.”

Since sending the first two birthday days, Zoe has since sent one to Prince William for his 38th birthday in June, which she is still waiting on a reply from.

“The royal exchange has been a good distraction for Zoe during lockdown because she has spent almost all of it self-isolating due to her vulnerable older sister Rebecca, 21, who is disabled,” said Mr Bedford.

“It’s also lifted her spirits during this confusing time.

“She’s a very inquisitive and it’s great to see her get to grips with researching these highprofile people, while learning how to find addresses and send letters.”
