YOUR PICTURE OF THE DAY
Wainhouse Tower from Milner Royd Nature Reserve by Clive Siddall
Hebden Bridge needs further thought. Where does the flood water go? After extensive research by the village idiot he discovered it goes down the Calder.
Yorkshire Water’s heavy rain strategy in the Ryburn Valley is to fill the reservoirs to the brim and send the surplus down the Ryburn. With extra water in the Calder the predictable result is flooding in Sowerby Bridge. The burghers of Halifax are on the high ground and not bothered how much rain water goes down the Hebble, but residents in Elland and Brighouse feel the impact.
Further millions are to be spent on the A629 before assessing the results of stage one. The first phase was supposed to speed up access to the motorway from Halifax. My experience is that the bottleneck has been moved from the top of Salterhebble to the bottom. The green wall was greenwash and is looking tatty. It cost a fortune and will absorb less carbon dioxide than my back garden.
Reid Anderson (Courier letters, July 23) pointed out that air quality at Salterhebble is poor and promoting traffic growth will just make matters even worse.
Finally, the recycling depot in
Elland remains closed. The site will only take about 12 locals at any time. It is quite easy to stay two metres apart and outdoors where air circulation is good. The consequence is people are travelling to Halifax, more air pollution at Salterhebble and more carbon dioxide emissions.
When people can go to the pub or shopping and be indoors less than two metres apart, I fail to see the logic. struggling to survive in these straightened times they decide to add two more hours to the parking limits and to include them on Sundays.
Surely it would have made more sense to allow us more time to visit town centres to help with the recovery of our economy instead of imposing more restrictions and now to include every day of the week.
Common sense has gone out of the window and will deter rather than encourage the people of Calderdale to support struggling retailers and businesses.
