Lightcliffe’s run chase falls short but Brighouse are top after Oulton victory

-

LIGHTCLIFFE’S YOUNG second team were edged out by 27 runs in their Bradford Premier West clash with Bankfoot.

James Horne and Liam Holmes took early wickets, while a first ever senior stumping for 14-year-old Finn Brookes were among the highlights as Bankfoot were dismissed for 152.

Captain Rhys Jowett and Atkinson gave Lightcliffe a solid start but they were always behind the run rate.

Two former Lightcliffe players starred in the first round of County Championship matches. Alex Lees, now with Durham,

hit a century against his former county Yorkshire, while Ollie Robinson of Sussex, took eight wickets, including 5-29 in the second innings, as his team defeated Hampshire.

Brighouse are top of the West Section in the Division Three League Cup after defeating Oulton by 13 runs.

Yasir Hussain (48) and Mohammed Waseem (43) steered their side to a score of 241, which proved to be just out of reach for Oulton.

Marrawat Hussain (3-47) was the pick of the Brighouse bowlers.

Yorkshire got off the mark in the Bob Willis Trophy by recording a six-wicket victory over Durham at Emirates Riverside.

Andrew Gale’s men required 68 on the final day to secure the win. Even after rain delayed the start of the action, the White Rose wasted little time in getting over the line, needing only 10.4 overs. Dawid Malan made 73 before he was dismissed, but it was Harry Brook that delivered the win, blasting four sixes on the day, including backto-back maximums to end the contest.

Yorkshire take 19 points from the contest and head into their next match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge with momentum.

“To come in and repay the faith that Galey and Martyn have put in me and to help the team get over the line in the first game is very satisfying,” said Malan.

“Earning the respect of the guys is key before you can really start giving opinions or views in front of the players, so hopefully I can continue from here and keep scoring runs.”
