establishment should be forced to display signs like “No Mask, No Entry”. They should refuse to serve those who don’t comply. In fact they should be forced to do so under penalty of hefty fines, even closure, if they allow customers on to their premises who don’t comply with the requirements of face covering and distancing. Let us take these steps now before we have no choice when the second phase of the pandemic strikes, bringing with it more restrictions on our freedom caused by the irresponsible minority who always spoil it for the rest of us and themselves! billboard adverts write in and we can get them shut down too.

Don’t buy clothes from a company that puts your children at risk from sexual predators. Next step...together maybe we can get them shut down too.

AS a strong supporter of any actions which help us combat the current climate emergency I was pleased to see that the national Green Home Grant scheme will finally go live towards the end of September and that it is also linked to the opportunity for local authorities to bid for money from this fund.

In the North we have a large number of older, colder homes

– with 64 per cent of our existing housing below the council tax Band C. So, this £2bn scheme must not be the limit of the Government’s ambitions.

Homeowners, including landlords, will be able to apply for two thirds of the cost of home improvements with grants capped at £5,000. And, even more importantly, low income households will qualify for grants worth up to £10,000 to support energy efficiency upgrades.

So I would urge our cabinet and officers to put together a bid promptly in order to ensure we benefit from this opportunity. These sorts of improvements will provide better home environments, save the householder money AND help with the climate emergency, so it is a ‘win - win - win’ opportunity that we must not let slip!
