Rotary clubs and businesses show support is ballooning

- Sal Wilcox

CALDERDALE BUSINESSES and Rotary Clubs have joined forces to organise a special virtual balloon race, in a bid to raise vital funds for Overgate Hospice.

The team behind the helium fuelled event organised it in lieu of the annual Great Get Together fun day, which was sadly cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

The virtual balloon raise will take place on August 31, participants can enter a variety of categories and the balloons that travel the furthest will win a hamper.

Each balloon costs £3 to enter and the winners will be announced

‘We all recognise Overgate as one of the most worthy causes in the district’

on September 6. Social distancing measures will be in place in order to protect participants and volunteers.

The money raised will be split between Overgate Hospice and The Bolton Brow Academy.

Organiser Bob Galtrey said: “The organisers of The Great Get Together were unable to operate their usual activities and we all recognise Overgate as one of the most worthy causes in the district.

“All of our committee groups have been involved in various fundraising events for the hospice and we all know someone who has benefited from the brilliant work they do.

“We are aware of the problems they have faced during lockdown and the difficulties in raising the money required to keep on doing what they do so well.

“We therefore felt that we should try to support them financially and also remind people that The Great Get Together team were still actively helping local charities.”

The Elland based hospice provides specialist palliative care for adults in Calderdale.

Due to the coronavirus crisis, the charity was forced to cancel several of their popular Spring/ Summer fundraising events.

They also had to close all fourteen of their charity shops for three months. Despite losing these two major sources of income, in order to continue providing their round the clock care, the hospice needs to find £11,600 every single day.
