Pub swaps pints for presents by helping families

- Sam McKeown

A MANAGER at a Brighouse pub has decided to swap pulling pints to delivering Christmas cheer with a charity.

Aiden Chafer, who runs the Black Bull Hotel, in Thornton Square, said he wants to use the time he has to help Brighouse charity Focus4Hope, while his pub remains shut due to Covid restrictions across Calderdale.

Mr Chafer said the pub is being used as a donation point throughout December for the charity to help low-income families and the homeless over the festive season.

He said: “There’s three of us who are helping Focus4Hope with this project named ‘Tears for Tiers’.

“People have been struggling during lockdown such as families that might not be able to buy their children presents this year.

“We want to help families and the homeless with sanitary products because these items can be expensive.”

Mr Chafer said the project also ties in with the nationwide Craft Union initiative, which has seen pubs up and down the country being used as donation points while temporarily closed.

“We heard about the Craft Union initiative and thought it was a good idea to do in order to help a local Brighouse charity such as Focus4Hope,” he said.

“For us, we’re trying to push other people within the area to donate any items around the house, which they’re not using and could be used a gift to someone less fortunate.”

Louise Reed, of Focus4Hope, said: “We’re blown away by the help we’re receiving leading up to Christmas.

“It’s important for people to get involved with positive projects within the community.

“Right now, we’re working with schools across Calderdale which are helping with our new Christmas Hamper project.

“These hampers will be sent to children, who are being cared for by institutions, or social services.

“Any help is appreciated so we’d like to give a big thank you to the team at the Black Bull Hotel. Going forward, we’re looking for anything non-perishable.

“Focus4Hope also has a monetary donation box at Brighouse Tesco.”
